15th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS)

The East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars was first launched in 1997 in Hong Kong to provide a regular regional forum for doctoral-prepared nurse academics and their students. Since 1997, annual forums have been held in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines. Singapore will be hosting the event for the first time in 2012.

Asia Pacific Research Symposium (APRS)
The Asia Pacific Research Symposium 2012 is the premier nursing and health research conference for research conducted in the Asia Pacific Rim. The inaugural symposium was held at Griffith University, Australia in 2008 and followed in 2010 by the Taipei Medical University, Taiwan. The 2012 event will be held at the National University of Singapore immediately followed the 15th EAFONS conference.

Associate Professor Hae-Ra Han, The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, USA
Dr. Han is Associate Professor and Director of the PhD program at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, and has a joint appointment in the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute. She received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, and obtained her doctorate in nursing from University of Maryland at Baltimore. She completed her post-doctoral training in community-based participatory research (CBPR) methods and program evaluation at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
As a recognized leader in CBPR, Dr. Han works to reduce health disparities by designing and evaluating innovative community outreach interventions to prevent and manage chronic conditions such as cancer, hypertension, and diabetes in traditionally underserved ethnic minorities—particularly those with limited English proficiency. Her publications have addressed community-based intervention methodologies with the goal of directing the nursing community toward sustainable health promotion based on strong community partnership.
She has taught translational research seminar, research methods, grant writing, and global health in the graduate programs at the School. She has also guided the development of postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students in nursing in the U.S., China, Korea, Thailand, and South Africa.
Dr. Han has received multiple awards for her scientific and academic contributions from the Southern Nursing Research Society, the American Public Health Association, and the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, and acclaim for outstanding community service from both the League of Korean Americans-Maryland and U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md).
Topic: Improving the translation of evidence into practice
   Professor Leanne Aitken
   Critical Care Nursing, Griffith University and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia
   Professor Leanne Aitken is the Chair in Critical Care Nursing at Griffith University and Princess
Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia and the Convenor of Higher Degree Research students within the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This role incorporates conduct and implementation of a range of clinical research and practice improvement projects, as well as postgraduate teaching and supervision. Mentoring clinical staff through the conduct and implementation of research is an important component of the role. Professor Aitken’s research focuses on trauma, decision making practices of critical care nurses and a range of clinical practice issues including sedation management within critical care.
Professor Aitken is a co-editor of the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses’ (ACCCN) Critical Care Nursing text that is published by Elsevier. She is also a Fulbright Alumnus after receiving a Fulbright Senior Scholarship to undertake research at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Professor Aitken peer reviews for multiple international journals as well as for national research grant funding bodies and is a member of the Queensland Health Clinical Senate which provides guidance to the government regarding health policy.

Instructions for abstract submission
1.
Abstract must be submitted in English.
2.
The abstract should not exceed 250 words excluding title, authors and institutions.
3.
Each registrant is only allowed to submit ONE abstract.
4.
All abstracts must be submitted online. Please enter your details in the online form below and click ‘Continue’ to verify your entries and submit your abstract.
5.
Deadline for abstract submission: 31 October 2011.
6.
Applicants will be notified if their abstract has been accepted by 15 November 2011.
7.
Applicants whose abstract has been accepted must register for the conference and pay the early-bird registration fee by 05 December 2011. Accepted abstracts will be eliminated from the programme on this date if registration and payment have not been received.
The Scientific Subcommittee will use the following criteria for selection of abstracts:
1.
The abstract must be relevant to one of the conference themes. Authors are asked to indicate which of the themes is appropriate for the presentation.
2.
The material in the abstract should be of original work with the focus clearly stated.
3.
If the abstract is reporting research it must be clear whether this is work in progress or completed research. The text must be arranged as follows: (a) Purpose of the study/project, (b) Methods, (c) Results and (d) Conclusions.
*Prizes will be given out to the top 3 oral and poster presentation.
